Plants, algae and many species of bacteria create their own food. All organisms that create their own food are called photoautotroph, or photosynthetic organisms. This is possible by a process called photosynthesis. This process converts carbon dioxide or CO2 into organic compounds using sunlight’s energy (Asimov, 1968).

Photosynthesis is a chemical process. It happens differently in different photosynthetic organisms. For instance, in plants, algae, and cyan bacteria, this process requires water, and carbon dioxide which are converted into organic compounds where oxygen, or O2 is released as a waste product. Now, this chemical process begins when proteins called photosynthetic reaction centers which contain chlorophylls, within photosynthetic organisms absorbs sun’s energy. In plants, these proteins are present inside chloroplasts, whereas in bacteria, they are present in the plasma membrane. The energy absorbed by chlorophylls is stored in form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and the rest of the energy is used in removing electrons that may exist in substance like water, which are then used in the reactions that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds such as sugars (Asimov, 1968).

Photosynthesis plays a very important role as far as photosynthetic organism life is concerned. It maintains normal level of oxygen in the atmosphere because it releases oxygen as a waste product to the atmosphere. It is evident that nearly all life on earth depends on oxygen directly or indirectly. Organisms depend on oxygen directly as a source of energy or indirectly as a source of energy in the food they consume (Asimov, 1968).

For survival, photosynthetic organisms must make their own food. Carbon dioxide, water and energy from the sun are essential for this process to be completed (Asimov, 1968).
